Carnival is in Sardinia

7 days of creative workshops, February 9 to 16 2024 

  1. Photography workshop: to make a Carnet de voyage,
  2. Workshops to manufacture masks with the plastic artist, Mounir Chaïbi
  3. Visit to the Museum of Masks of Mamoiada and archaeological sites of the ancient nuragic civilization (Barumini, Pozzo di Santa Cristina)
  4. Participation in the carnival of Barbagia in Mamoiada, Ottana and the carnival of Bosa.
  5. Included : material for workshops, all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and tastings, in restaurants or farm holidays
  6. You must have a phone or a digital camera, a laptop PC is recommended
  7. Possibility to customize the experience ( participate a day or two, transport, etc.)
  8. Accommodation not included, to be booked at the rural hotel La Corte degli ulivi in Tresnuraghes, prices: 30€ per person in double room, 50€ double room for single use, breakfast is included
  9. All workshops will be held at La Corte degli Ulivi, an elegant rustic house surrounded by greenery a few steps from the sea and ten minutes from Bosa, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

February 9 to 16 2024

DAY 1 : Friday 9 February

At 15h check in at the rural hotel La Corte degli Ulivi in Tresnuraghes, where all the workshops will take place.
At 6h presentation of the program of the week and meeting with Prof. Piera Perria specialist of masks of Sardinia.

At 20h: Aperitif and dinner at La Corte degli Ulivi.

DAY 2: Saturday, February 10 “Cantine aperte a Bosa” open cellars

From 9h to 13h : Mask workshop
Lunch in Tresnuraghes
From 15h to 18h: Mask workshop: mixed media (paper, fabric, etc.)
Photography workshop: the carnet de voyage, how to make photographs that tell experiences, trips, emotions…
during all excursions participants will be invited to photograph with the teaching photographer at your side.
Around 19h, departure for Bosa (10 minute drive), a characteristic medieval town with its houses of various colors of the old town, where the inhabitants open their cellars to taste the Malvasia, typical wine of the area.
Dinner in Bosa: street food, with food trail. Everyone disguises themselves as they want for a joyful party.

DAY 3: Sunday, February 11 “Carnival of Ottana”

From 9h to 11h: Mask workshop and photography workshop  introduction to creative photography, theory and technique.
Lunch in Tresnuraghes. Departure for the Carnival of Ottana (about an hour drive)
The Ottanese Carnival is one of the most famous and evocative in Sardinia. The characters that can be admired during the parade of Ottana are three: the Boes, the Merdules and Sa Filonzana. The Boes and the Merdules is a representation that takes up the theme of the relationship between man and animal, inthe man tries to subdue the animal by training it. The Boes wear “sa caratza” the wooden mask that reproduces the ox, The Merdules, are disguised with a white sheepskin and a dark mask, which represents the face of an old and ugly man.
Visit the MAT museum: “Museum of Arts and Traditions” to discover the secrets of Carnival and the technique of making masks.

DAY 4: Monday, February 12

From 9h to 13h : laboratory of masks/photography : analysis of images taken in Ottana Lunch in Tresnuraghes

Aperitif at blue time, a magical moment to create amazing images. Dinner in Bosa.

DAY 5: Tuesday 13 February Shrove Tuesday “Carnival of Bosa, Carnival of Mamoiada”

At 9h: departure for Bosa
On Carrasegare Osincu: the participants, disguised as mourning women, wear black clothes and have a blackened face, playfully sing a funeral lament called “s’attittidu”, lament announcing the death of Carnival.

The rite of the Carnival of Mamoiada, a village in the center of Barbagia, is one of the oldest events in Sardinia, an event with a magical atmosphere that evokes an ancient ritual. Carnival doesn’t have that joyful taste of celebration but it lived like a sacred ceremony. The Mamuthones and the Issohadores, its characteristic masks, enliven the city festival with their propitiatory dance along the streets of the city.
The Mamuthones with velvet dresses and a black sheepskin (called Mastruca), a wooden mask painted black on the face, mark the rhythm of the parade carrying on the back of heavy bells that resonate with every dance step, while the Issohadores dressed in trousers and white shirt, a red jacket, escort the Mamuthones along the way, involving the spectators catching them suddenly, with a long reed rope, called “Sa soca”

At 15h00: Dances of the Sardinian tradition in the square, sweets and wine for all
At 15h30: Traditional parade of Mamuthones and floats, participation in the parade with masks made during the workshops
At 18h00: favata in piazza (typical dish with beans and lard)
Dinner at Mamoiada at 21:00 Evening with masked dances

DAY 6: Wednesday, February 14 “Nuraghe Su Nuraxi, Barumini”

From 9h to 11h: Masks and photography workshop : analysis of the photos taken and drafting of the first draft of the carnet de voyage
Departure for Barumini (1h30mn from Tresnuraghes)
Lunch and visit of the archaeological site.
In the middle of the Marmilla, Barumini is one of the most fascinating places of the nuragic civilization of the island. At the entrance of the village there is a monumental complex that has made it famous in the world: on Nuraxi, the only archaeological site in Sardinia declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

DAY 7: Thursday, February 15 “Sanctuary of Santa Cristina”

After breakfast, departure to the nuragic sanctuary of Santa Cristina , archaeological area located in Paulilatino
(journey time 40 minutes)
The sacred well of Santa Cristina a mysterious place, a fascinating archaeological monument, an architectural marvel with its trapezoidal staircase seems an invitation to descend into the belly of the earth, a masterpiece of the Nuragic era dating back to 1000 B.C.
